From Young Mum to Granny Kuddles: Lessons on Intentional Bonding and the Power of Music

Tuesdays are my favourite day of the week as it's the day I get to hang out with my little man, and we go to our favourite activity of the week - music class!

Psalm is a lot more engaged than his father was, 25 years ago, when he attended my first toddler music classes. Psalm is more attentive, more curious about the other toddlers in the room and recently developed an obsession for the bubble machine!

To be fair to his dad, Psalm has my undivided attention this time round. As both his class leader and mum, Olu had to contend with sharing me with other babies in his class - and he didn't take kindly to that, understandably. With hindsight, that was probably one sacrifice too far to ask a toddler. But I did what I had to do, as a young mum trying to make a living in music education in the UK, without a network of friends and family around me.

Now, as granny Kuddles, I can give Psalm my undivided attention and every Tuesday we fill up our love bank with singing, dancing, playing percussion instruments and the all important bubbles. We then have lunch together, just the two of us (we sometimes let grandad come if he has been good) after which Psalm naps for an hour on our drive down to his nursery. I drop him off and head back to work (still a working girl!) - my heart singing with joy and gratitude for the experience.

In 25 years time, Psalm may not remember these moments, but I will treasure them forever and thanks to technology, I will be able to spam our WhatsApp group chat with the millions of photos and videos I have taken of him making me laugh in his music class.

How are you building connections with your little ones? Time flies so fast, before you know it, they will be towering over you and asking to borrow your car keys. The toddler years, especially, are so fleeting.

My experiences with toddlers in my music classes in the UK inspired me to start Boogie Babies in Nigeria. We make it easy for you to connect with your child through structured, congnitive boosting play, whether at home, in one our our centres or at a specially curated venue.

Be intentional about bonding and building a memory bank with your little one. Your heart will thank you for it and so will theirs!
