Easter - A Metaphor for Musical Growth and Transformation

A reflection on how learning music mirrors Christ's crucifixion, ressurection and ascension.

Easter is one of my favourite times of the year and I try to make time to reflect on it's profound messages of struggle, human failure, God's unfailing love and enduring hope.

Christ’s Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Ascension offer beautiful parallels to the process of learning and growing through music.

The Crucifixion
speaks to sacrifice and struggle. Just as Christ endured great pain and hardship, musicians—young and old—face moments of difficulty and doubt. Whether it’s the frustration of learning a new piece, developing technique, or simply staying motivated, there are times when the musical path feels like a personal “crucifixion.” But it’s through these challenges that growth begins.

The Resurrection
symbolizes renewal and victory over struggle. After the hard work, something beautiful starts to emerge—a breakthrough in understanding, a song finally played with joy, or confidence blooming during a performance. Like the Resurrection, these moments are signs of new life and renewed purpose on the journey.

The Ascension
reminds us of the higher calling and the ongoing journey upward. As Christ ascended, He left a legacy of hope and promise. In music, once we’ve overcome one hurdle, we find ourselves called higher—to explore more deeply, express more freely, and share our gifts with others. Every lesson and every practice session builds toward this elevation.

So whether you or your child are just beginning, returning, or continuing your music journey, we warmly invite you to embrace this season as a time to rise, recommit, and ascend. Let the discipline, creativity, and joy of music-making be your path of transformation. There is always more to discover—and we are here to walk with you every step of the way.
